Track Collections and Copying Tracks

This page discusses both online collections and track synchronizing.

Magnatune

Listening and browsing of the Magnatune online store is supported. First, the player has to download the track list from the Magnatune page - direct browsing is not yet supported. Then, you can browse the Magnatune as a regular collection, listen to tracks etc.

Ampache

You can browse any Ampache server accessible by your phone. You just need to enter the host name or IP address where the server is running, username (optional) and password. You can even synchronize your collection and download all missing tracks from the server.

Peer-to-peer connection between two devices

Ambient can act as an Ampache server itself: you can simply turn on WiFi on both of your devices, start the Ampache server (included in Ambient) and view/play/download tracks on the other device. Unfortunately, this functionality has several shortcomings:

  • For now, only WiFi is supported (Bluetooth is currently unsupported)
  • Android does not support ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) WiFi connections - you both need to connect to the same access point in order for the devices to be able to communicate with each other.

First, turn on the server (this is in the Ampache menu in the Configure Embedded Server submenu). Supply a password which the other party will use to access your server and press Start Server . On the other device, go into the Configure Ampache Connection submenu and enter the IP of the server. Note : you must set the port: 5413. Leave the username empty and enter the correct password . Switch to the Browser submenu and you can now browse and listen to tracks stored on the remote device. You can even synchronize your collection and download all missing tracks.
